In the case of curing epoxy resins, secondary aliphatic amines may function as curing agents. They interact and bond with epoxy resin to create a cross-linked polymer network which contributes to the hardening of the epoxy. Unlike primary aliphatic amines, secondary aliphatic amines tend to have slower reaction rates with epoxy resins, thus providing an extended working time during the mixing and application phases. Epoxy that has cured with secondary aliphatic amines tends to have good mechanical properties along with exceptional chemical resistance. Their properties can further be modified by the addition of other curing agents or additives, making them useful for epoxy-based coatings, adhesives, and composites.
